If you follow me on Instagram, you'll know that I've been travelling quite a bit for work this year. In addition to upping my frequent flyer miles status, it has also allowed me to streamline my approach to packing for travel.
At this point, I can go up to two weeks in a carry-on bag. (Ahem, yes, that makes me proud.) ;)
Through the trial-and-error of packing for previous trips, I've narrowed it down to five essential items that I bring on every. single. trip.
Check out my list of top 5 travel garments that you'll always find in my case, along with a few shop-able favourites, too.
1. Black jeans
You'll note a theme pretty quickly in this list of necessary garments. They're pretty much all pieces that can go from day to night, with the exception of the sneakers. In my experience, a good pair of black jeans work overtime in a trip wardrobe. Whether worn with a t-shirt or a silk blouse, a stylish, straight-fit pair can be the foundation for a number of outfits on a trip.
The Levi's Dad jeans are a go-to for me.
When I travel, whether for work or for personal, I always have either a blazer, leather jacket or jean jacket along for the ride. I typically wear the heaviest topper on the plane to ease the suitcase squeeze.
If it's a work trip, my MVP topper is always a blazer (my go-to is the Babaton Agency blazer from Aritzia) because it can work over a blouse, tank or tee for daytime meetings and then slipped on over a sleek slip dress for evening events.
For my recent trip to Europe, I packed a blazer in a tiny packing cube (I find this helps limit wrinkling when folded just so) and then wore my oversized leather jacket on the plane for more laid-back moments on the trip.
We all know that a comfortable shoe is a must-have when travelling. That's why, regardless of whether I'm travelling in winter or summer, I always bring a comfy sneaker.
I recently received these Reebok C85 Vintage Women's Shoes and was super impressed with how kind they were to my feet, even brand new out-of-the-box and during 25,000-plus step days.
A sleek white sneaker is an easy match for casual looks, while also adding an element of effortlessness to something a little dressier such as a skirt or flowy dress.
To know me is to know that I love handbags, which means I'm lucky to have a few to choose from when I travel.
My must-haves for a travel handbag is one that can fit all the day's essentials (cardholder, lipstick, phone and, ideally, a small camera). It also must be crossbody or convertible to be worn hands-free.
I don't typically take more than one handbag with me on my travels, so I also prefer to pack one that can work with daytime and nighttime looks. The medium Chanel classic flap and Louis Vuitton BB Alma are two favourites for me.
Last, but definitely not least, a white t-shirt is an essential element of packing. Perfect for pairing with most pieces — from jeans to skirts to shorts — they're also easy to quickly launder in a hotel room sink should you run low on essentials during your trip.
