One Girl Can ...
... change the world.
... be anything she wants to be.
... govern nations.
... alter the course of history.
... love who she wants to love.
These are just a few of the things that come to mind when I think about all the amazing, unstoppable things that girls and women can accomplish. That is, if they're allowed to.
While I've been fortunate to be raised — by a strong mother and with several strong female role models in my sisters, cousins and more — in a country that allows girls and women access to education and employment, I realize that, elsewhere in the world, others are not nearly as privileged.
And that's what makes the mission of the Vancouver-based foundation One Girl Can so important.
The charity provides young girls in Kenya and Uganda with access to education, scholarships and mentorship programs, so that they may lead their families and villages — and break the cycle of prejudice.
The One Girl Can team have partnered with the Vancouver-based brand Brunette the Label to create two limited-edition t-shirts. Priced at $35, all proceeds from the sale of each shirt goes back to supporting girls in Africa.
One Girl Can is also taking part in the International Day Of The Girl campaign on Oct. 11, spearheaded by the United Nations, to help further raise awareness of and support for girls around the world.
Because, one girl, can.
