I've been venturing out on a few first dates lately (not quite 50, but I feel like it's getting close. Ha!) — and I've found dressing for them can be tricky.
After turning to Google and feeling like all the outfit suggestions there were all either too "not my style" or too "fashion girl," I thought I would weigh in with my own suggested look.
When I'm going on a first date I want to strike the perfect balance between looking stylish and looking effortless. Even if it took me a good hour to get ready.
So, without further ado, here are a few of my top tips for dressing for a first date.
1. Dress like you
Not a big fan of dresses? Don't wear one. Hate skinny jeans? Skip 'em. It's always a good idea to dress like yourself on a first date — or at any time, for that matter. Not only will you feel more comfortable in a look that feels like "you" — but that comfort level will hopefully help you snag that elusive (fingers crossed!) second date.2. Pick a favourite piece
Whenever I need an extra dose of self confidence — whether it's for a work event, an interview or a date — I love wearing an item that I feel like an absolute3. When in doubt, dress down
Not sure where the night will end up? Dress for the possibility of a more casual itinerary by wearing shoes and clothes that are just as comfortable walking from the car to dinner as they are doing something more ... eventful. You don't want to end up walking through a farmer's market or at an outdoor concert in sky-high heels wishing for the night to be over just because your feet are K.I.L.L.I.N.G you. That's why I opted for these fab (and oh-so comfy!) espadrilles.
4. Show strategic skin
This is really more of a personal preference, but I prefer to choose one asset to show off, and cover up the rest while one a first date. For this look, I opted to show off my shoulders in an off-the-shoulder chiffon top. The peek of collarbone makes me feel feminine and pretty without going overboard.
5. Opt for a playfully undone hairstyle
Lastly, skip the perfect curls or stick-straight strands and go for something a bit undone. I often opt for either a beachy wave or the hairstyle I'm rocking here, which I've playfully dubbed my "fun bun."Hope this helps and happy dating!
