How to wear a slip dress

I loved this floral slip dress from the moment I saw it. And I loved it even more once I tried it on.

The cute is simple and sweet, without being too sweet. Know what I mean?

But loving something in the fitting room doesn't always translate into loving something, well, outside the fitting room. And I was worried my love affair with this simple slip dress would fall into the latter.

But, happily, I've found this dress to be super easy to wear.

Here are a few pointers for successfully pulling off a slip dress: 

1. Keep it simple. You don't want to go too crazy with outfit add-ons when it comes to these simple styles. The look is quite classic and minimalist, so it's not exactly made for pairing with statement necklaces and oversized bags. For me, I found the look felt most complete when paired with simple sandals and an on-trend choker necklace. Basically, I let the slip dress be the star of the look.

2. Show some skin ... or don't. A slip dress, by design, is skin-baring. It is modelled after undergarments, after all. If you're not ready to show too much skin (as I wasn't the day we shot these photos), pair it with a layering piece underneath. I love the look of a simple T-shirt worn casually underneath for a '90s appeal, or a mock-turtleneck for an even more covered-up look.

3. The long and the short of it. As I'm sure you're already well aware, these styles come in all lengths: mini, short, to-the-knee, midi and maxi. While I love all the above, I find a short style is the most universally complementary, especially when layered with something underneath. Why? Well, because a mini is too short and the longer lengths often appear either too dress, or too literal. As in, they look like you're wearing a silk nightie dress. So not ideal under most circumstances.
